Led by father +
daughter duo

Ian and Ruth Armstrong, Scarborough Surf was born from a desire to share our passion, knowledge and the experience of surfing with others. Scarborough is an incredibly special place, shaped by the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. Sometimes the ocean is wild, sometimes it's tame - it’s a playground worthy of respect and the right guidance.

Ian and his wife Lee have chosen to raise their family in this environment, with a focus on a connection to the ocean, building their life around surfing. Ian is a big wave world champion, and has coached, mentored and guided surfers since 1994. His children who have chosen to surf competitively have excelled on both a national and international level.

Our Story

Traveling and surfing away from home made me realise how much ocean knowledge my family has to share. My parents raised eight kids with surfing at the core of our lives, embracing a nature-connected, unconventional lifestyle. My dad, a world champion big wave surfer, pioneered Cape Town’s big wave scene and handcrafts surfboards with deep ocean expertise.

Working with him is a privilege - sharing his knowledge while keeping my love for surfing, the ocean, and our hometown, Scarborough, alive.

A few years back, a documentary was made that encapsulates our story well. Watch it here.
